about

I wrote this song for the first time in 2014, shortly before touring it around Europe and China heavily. That version was considerably longer and more complicated than this version, which harnessed the key moments and squeezed it into a concise pop song. It might not be better, but whatcha gonna do.

I once sang an a cappella version of this song at the Sidewalk Cafe open mic in New York. It was the biggest thrill, despite being a wholly unconvincing performance.

Production isn't my strong point. I usually get bored before I finish a song, so it's really quite incredible that this song exists and that's why I'm sharing.

The song is about lending your jacket to somebody you love on a cold, late night walk home and then never seeing them again. And wondering what that means.

lyrics

Darling, if you care for me you'd be creeping around for carefully,
Keeping it out of sight, off the street where I live,
I don't wanna hear about this.
Darling, if you wear it, keep a look in your eye like "Not for me,
I've got all I need, back there working for me".

No matter what you say it's who's keeping you warm,
No matter how you play it, it's who's got the jacket on
No matter what you say, it's who's got your back and you're wearing me out
So darling if you care for me, keep it. You wear it well, keep it warm.

I'm gonna need to stay inside if you need time to think,
Girl, that's fine, but if you're on my street hanging with him,
I don't be that guy again.
Darling, if you care for me, keep it alive but don't call it in.
Like you won't believe, I've got all I need, out there waiting for me.

No matter what you say it's who's keeping you warm,
No matter how you play it, it's who's got the jacket on
No matter what you say, it's who's got your back and you're wearing me out
So darling if you care for me, keep it. You wear it well, keep it warm.

You won't let go of my sleeve,
You've got lost property,
And if you can't bear the wait of this thing, I'll have it back
But darling, if you care for me, be careful please,
There's a lot more to this that we've yet to undress,
I've seen you, I've seen the way you look at me
If you wasn't mine then the cold wouldn't be
So I've got all I need, it's out there waiting for me
